Session 1 · Ecclesiastes 1–5
Vapor under the sun, and gifts from God.
- The Preacher, son of David and king in Jerusalem, declares that all is vanity, that generations pass, and that there is nothing new under the sun.
- He tests pleasure, projects, and toil, finds them vapor, sees that wisdom outshines folly, and still calls enjoyment of one's work a gift from the hand of God.
- There is a season for every matter under heaven, God has set eternity in the human heart, and from beneath the sun the death of man and beast looks the same.
- He sees oppression with no comforter, judges a quiet handful better than restless toil, and says two are better than one.
- He warns the worshiper to guard steps and vows in God's house, shows that money does not satisfy, and again names joy in toil as God's gift.
Session 2 · Ecclesiastes 6–10
Crooked things, one fate, and quiet wisdom.
- A man may receive wealth, honor, and children and still not be given the power to enjoy them, so that a stillborn seems to rest more than he does.
- A good name is better than ointment, the day of death better than birth for the sober, and God made mankind upright, but they have sought out many schemes.
- No one knows the day of misery, a delayed sentence lets evil seem safe, and the Preacher cannot find out the work of God from beginning to end.
- The same event comes to all, the dead know nothing under the sun, a living dog is better than a dead lion, and joy with the wife you love is a man's portion.
- Dead flies spoil ointment, folly is set in many high places, and the words of the wise heard in quiet are better than a ruler's shout among fools.
Session 3 · Ecclesiastes 11–12
Sow in the morning, and remember your Creator.
- Cast your bread upon the waters, sow in the morning and the evening because you do not know which will prosper, and rejoice in youth while remembering that God will bring you into judgment.
- Remember your Creator before the difficult days, while the silver cord is not yet snapped, for the dust returns to the earth and the spirit to God, and the end of the matter is to fear God and keep His commandments.
