Session 1 · Esther 1–5
A hidden Jewess, a cast lot, and a fast in Susa
- Ahasuerus displays the wealth of Persia, Vashti refuses to be paraded, and a decree goes out commanding every man to be master in his own house.
- Esther, cousin of Mordecai the Benjamite, is taken into the king's house and made queen without revealing her people, while Mordecai uncovers a plot and is forgotten.
- Haman the Agagite is enraged that Mordecai will not bow, casts the lot called Pur for a day of slaughter, and seals a decree to destroy the Jews.
- Mordecai mourns in sackcloth, and Esther agrees to go to the king unsummoned after a three-day fast, saying that if she perishes, she perishes.
- The king extends the scepter, Esther asks Haman and the king to a banquet, and Haman builds a gallows for Mordecai fifty cubits high.
Session 2 · Esther 6–10
A sleepless night, Haman's gallows, and the feast of Purim
- The king cannot sleep, the chronicles are read, and Haman, arriving to ask for Mordecai's death, is ordered to honor him through the city.
- At the second banquet Esther asks for her life and her people's life, names Haman, and the king has him hanged on the gallows built for Mordecai.
- Because a Persian decree cannot simply be recalled, a second decree lets the Jews defend themselves, and the city of Susa rejoices.
- On the thirteenth of Adar the Jews stand against their attackers, they do not take the plunder, and the ten sons of Haman are hanged.
- Purim is established on the fourteenth and fifteenth of Adar, with feasting, portions sent to neighbors, and gifts to the poor, while Mordecai seeks his people's good.
