Session 1 · Hosea 1–5
A prophet's marriage exposes a people who forgot.
- Hosea is told to marry Gomer, a wife of whoredom, and their children are named Jezreel, No Mercy, and Not My People.
- The unfaithful wife is stripped and then wooed, and the LORD promises to betroth Israel to himself forever in steadfast love.
- Hosea buys back the woman he loves, and Israel is pictured without king or sacrifice until they return and seek the LORD.
- The LORD brings a charge against the land, for there is no faithfulness and no knowledge of God, and the priests are blamed.
- Ephraim and Judah stumble under judgment, and the LORD says he will withdraw until they acknowledge their guilt and seek his face.
Session 2 · Hosea 6–10
Love is chosen over sacrifice, and the wind is sown.
- The people say, Come, let us return, yet their love is like a morning cloud, and God desires steadfast love more than sacrifice.
- Ephraim is a half-baked cake and a silly dove, fluttering to Egypt and Assyria, and they do not cry to God from the heart.
- They set up kings without God, kiss calves, and sow the wind, hiring lovers among the nations and forgetting their Maker.
- Joy leaves the feasts, prophet and sanctuary are rejected, and Ephraim's glory flies away like a bird because of deep corruption.
- Israel is a luxuriant vine that multiplies altars, and the word comes to sow righteousness, break up fallow ground, and seek the LORD.
Session 3 · Hosea 11–14
A father's love ransoms, and the dew heals return.
- God remembers loving Israel as a child and calling his son out of Egypt, and he asks how he can give Ephraim up.
- Ephraim feeds on wind and multiplies lies, while Jacob's story is told as both a grasp for advantage and a man who sought God.
- Idolatry is condemned, the Savior of Israel is confessed, and the LORD pledges to ransom his people from the power of Sheol.
- Israel is called to return with words of true petition, and God promises healing, dew, fragrance, and ways that are straight and right.
