Session 1 · Joshua 1–5
Promise crosses the river ahead of the people.
- After Moses dies, the LORD commands Joshua to cross the Jordan, to meditate on the Law day and night, and to be strong because God himself will go with him.
- Rahab of Jericho hides the two spies, confesses that the LORD has given Israel the land, and asks that a scarlet cord mark her house for mercy.
- The priests carrying the ark step into the Jordan, the waters stand in a heap, and the nation crosses on dry ground opposite Jericho.
- Twelve stones taken from the riverbed are set up at Gilgal so that children will hear what the LORD did when Israel passed over.
- The wilderness generation is circumcised, Passover is eaten, the manna stops, and Joshua worships the Commander of the LORD's army with his sandals removed.
Session 2 · Joshua 6–10
Jericho, Achan, a sworn lie, and a halted sun.
- Jericho falls after seven days of marching with the ark, the city is devoted to the LORD, and Rahab's household is brought out alive.
- Achan hides devoted spoil under his tent, Israel is beaten at Ai, and the lot, his confession, and the stones of Achor expose the sin.
- Ai is taken by the ambush the LORD directs, its king hangs until evening, and Joshua reads blessing and curse on Mount Ebal.
- The Gibeonites deceive Israel with worn-out bread and patched sandals, and an oath makes them servants of the altar rather than corpses.
- Five Amorite kings fall, hail kills more than the sword, the sun stands over Gibeon, and the southern cities are taken.
Session 3 · Joshua 11–15
The land is listed, and Caleb asks for the hill.
- Jabin of Hazor and the northern kings break at the waters of Merom, horses are hamstrung, chariots burn, and Hazor itself is burned.
- The narrator lists defeated kings, Sihon and Og beyond the Jordan and thirty-one kings in Canaan, so the gift can be remembered by name.
- Joshua is old and much land remains, the eastern tribes receive what Moses gave, and Levi is given the LORD himself for an inheritance.
- Caleb, now eighty-five, claims Hebron as Moses swore at Kadesh-barnea, and Joshua blesses him because he wholly followed the LORD.
- Judah's border is drawn town by town, Achsah receives the upper and lower springs, and the Jebusites remain in Jerusalem.
Session 4 · Joshua 16–20
Lots at Shiloh, and gates where a killer may flee.
- Ephraim receives its lot, and the Canaanites who remain in Gezer are subjected to forced labor rather than driven out.
- The daughters of Zelophehad inherit among the sons of Manasseh, and Joshua tells Joseph's tribes to clear the forest in spite of iron chariots.
- The tent of meeting is pitched at Shiloh, seven tribes are sent to write the land in a book, and Benjamin receives his lot.
- Simeon, Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan receive their cities, and Joshua is given Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim.
- Six cities of refuge are named so the manslayer who kills without intent may flee the avenger until the high priest dies.
Session 5 · Joshua 21–24
Not one word failed, and a household chooses.
- The Levites receive forty-eight cities with their pasture lands, and the text says not one word of the LORD's good promises failed.
- The eastern tribes build a great altar by the Jordan as a witness, Phinehas hears their oath, and the western tribes do not go to war.
- Old Joshua charges the leaders to cling to the LORD and warns that the nations left in the land will become a snare, a whip, and thorns.
- At Shechem Israel swears to serve the LORD, a stone under the terebinth is witness, and Joshua, Joseph's bones, and Eleazar are buried.
