Session 1 · Nehemiah 1–5
A cupbearer weeps, and the wall rises under guard
- In Susa Nehemiah hears that the wall of Jerusalem is broken and the gates burned, and he weeps, fasts, and prays before he speaks to the king.
- Artaxerxes sends his cupbearer with letters, Nehemiah inspects the ruins by night, and Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem begin to mock.
- Priests, goldsmiths, perfumers, and the daughters of Shallum repair their sections, while the nobles of Tekoa refuse to stoop to the work.
- The mockery becomes a threat of attack, so half the people hold spears and half build, each remembering that their God will fight for them.
- Nehemiah rebukes the nobles who are enslaving their brothers for debt, makes them restore the fields, and refuses the governor's food allowance.
Session 2 · Nehemiah 6–10
A great work, a read law, and a covenant in writing
- Nehemiah refuses the trap at Ono and a hired prophet's advice to hide in the temple, and the wall is finished in fifty-two days.
- He finds the genealogical register of the first return and enrolls the people, because the city is large and the inhabitants are few.
- Ezra reads the Book of the Law at the Water Gate from morning until midday, the Levites give the sense, and the people weep, then feast.
- They keep the Feast of Booths with great joy, and on the twenty-fourth day the Levites lead a confession that retells Israel's whole story.
- The leaders seal a covenant to keep the law, the Sabbath, and the service of the temple, saying they will not neglect the house of their God.
Session 3 · Nehemiah 11–13
Choirs on the wall, and a reform that had to be kept
- Lots are cast so that one in ten will live in Jerusalem, and the people bless those who willingly offer to inhabit the holy city.
- Two choirs process on top of the finished wall in opposite directions and meet at the house of God, and the joy is heard far away.
- Nehemiah returns to find Tobiah housed in a temple chamber, the Levites unpaid, the Sabbath turned into a market, and children who cannot speak the language of Judah.
